Does Using CBD Oil Show Up Positive in a Drug Test for THC?

I have been asked this question from a few people that are interested in using CBD Oil as an alternative to smoking Marijuana. Being that it is healthy and a legal alternative I decided to do some research on this topic.

Many people are tested for illicit drug use for various reasons. Drug testing is mandatory for federal employees, and even though its not required, more employers are implementing some type of screening. Then of course there is the court system, CPS, probation officers, and other third party entities as well.

When a drug test is mandated, everyone always follows the SAMHSHA(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) guidelines because it puts them on legal ground.

A urine drug screen is used to test for THC. A regular urine drug screen  for marijuana consists of an immunoassay with antibodies that are made to detect it. The main metabolite is 11-nor-delta9-caboxy-THC(THC-COOH).

Under SAMHSA guidelines the cutoff level for positive urine in the immunoassay is set at 50ng/mL level, a confirmatory GC/MS(Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) test is performed to verify the positive urine screen. The GC/MS has a cutoff level of 15ng/mL and is specific only for 11-nor-THCCOOH metabolite.

THC-COOH is known to have very little cross-reactivity to other cannabinoids that are not psychoactive such as CBD, CBG, CBN to name a few. This is good for "normal" consumers of CBD/Hemp Oil.

Individuals using unusually large doses of CBD(above 1000-2000mg) daily could theoretically test positive during the initial urinary screen. Although very rare, the urine screen in there cases would likely represent a "false positive" due to other non-THC metabolites or compounds, which may cross-react with the immunoassay. When this is the case, the confirmatory GC/MS test would be negative, as CBD and other cannabinoids will not be detected by the more accurate GC/MS screen.

Hemp contains anywhere from 1/10th to 1/300th THC. An individual would have to be consuming 1000-2000mg per day which is 3-6mg of THC.

So, someone who uses high quality CBD at the standard serving size is highly unlikely to test positive for THC. However, it's important to be aware that extremely high doses may result in a positive screen(that would subsequently shown to be false via GC/MS). Consumers need to be fully informed of the specific regulations posed by employers and adjust their consumption accordingly.

This article is based on the SAMHSA standards.

**Personally from those of you that do know about UA testing there is a possibility of a defective test as well. If you are consuming lower doses and test "false positive" you can have the lab check the screening via GC/MS.

Hopefully this will help you. If you have any questions consult a health care professional for advice.

HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!
